10 Years
Tuesday, March 20, 2018
10 gorram years since my last post here. I have had fun reading these entries and remembering or not remembering the context around the posts. I wish I would have posted more. And more pictures too!

I will add more here..

I don't remember the password to this thing.. but I have database access. Hacked. Looking at the code for this blog... holy sql-injection batman! What a P.O.S.
I'm pretty proud of how bad it is.. and that it still mostly works. The comment section is dead though. I think the hosting company edited the file due to spam by putting in a syntax error and an `exit();` at the top. :-p
Or maybe I did and don't remember.

I don't remember why I stopped posting here after I moved. But I did. I also haven't spoken to Joe in what must be several years by now. I have a new job. A new apartment. Married now. A second cat (Katy is well).

I want to bring this back in some form. The code for it needs to be re-jiggered to not let the dogs out though. Seriously.. this is not good. Luckily my PHP skills have been honed over the years. I'll be able to add in the proper mysql_real_escape_string function calls.
Grinning like an idiot right now. I'll probably remove all of the code that does any update queries and harden the selects and just update posts from the database like a pro for now.

So many other things have changed about me. And others are exactly the same. I don't know where to start really. I'll see what I can do about posting here again on the weekends. Even if there's a 0% chance anyone will read them. The old posts have been interesting to read. I want more of that.

p.s. what is this? a font-size for ants? I might make the new posts a bit larger for my old-man eyes while maintaining the retro look of the old ones.

We moved in to our new apartment yesterday. I rented a UHaul truck and we hired a college student to help us load and unload. I thought it would be weird hiring someone but it worked out perfectly. We needed help and I got to boss someone around for a few hours. He and I carried everything up the stairs while Valerie took things out of the truck and waited by the truck.

She had to wait by the truck because we were standing in a no standing zone in front of the fire department that is across the street. Aparently fire trucks have a hard time turning on these narrow streets if there are cars parked in front of the garage doors. The first time we pulled up I asked them if it was ok to park there to unload. They said it was ok only if someone was always with the truck ready to move it if they had to leave. She only had to drive around the block once to let a truck out.

It took three trips with the 10 foot truck. The first had the loveseat and two point nine cubic shit-tonnes of boxes. The second trip had all of the large heavy items. We discovered that a one year old double-thick pillow-topped queen sized matress weighs nine-hundred pounds. And the third trip was the washer and dryer and a bunch if random crap.

Question: How hard is it to give away a working, like-new washer and dryer in Brooklyn?
Answer: Impossible.

We have been placing ads on Craigslist for two weeks to no avail. Oh, we get plenty of responses. But they are all crazy people wanting us to ship it to them out of state somewhere. We are going to call Salvation Army to see if they can pick it up for free.

Let the unpacking begin.

He couldn't get in.
Wednesday, April 9, 2008
We are still looking for an apartment for May 1. We have applied to two so far. The first one was a 4th floor walkup in a brownstone. Several people applied right before us. We all passed the credit checks so the went with first come first get. The second one is a 2nd floor of walkup. People applied before us. We all passed the checks and we were supposed to hear back from them today and we didn't so I assume they offered the lease to someone else and are waiting on them to sign it to reject anyone. Makes me crazy.

Our landlord already found a tenant to move in after we move out. Kinda puts some pressure on us. He had been showing the place to people a few days last week. We were always here for the visits so we always let them in. On Sunday, we were out looking at places but told him it was ok to show the place in our absence. Turns out he had the wrong keys with him, so he couldn't get in. He actually lost the set of keys that would let him unlock the physical locks that hold the doors closed. Our landlord lost our keys.

He borrowed my set for an hour to make some copies. Entertainment at its best.

Edit: About ten minutes after I typed this up on my phone and saved it, Valerie called to tell me that we got the second apartment. They are sending us the lease and whatnot this week. Mmmmmmm.

Wii're Having Fun
Sunday, March 30, 2008
That's right, folks, we got a Wii. We have been wanting one for a while but kept putting it off. Then when we started looking, there weren't any available anywhere. to the rescue. They do pre-orders for their next shipment. Ordered end of February and got it March 28.

I had played Sports on it before and a select few other games. But not any shooters. Metriod. I have been a fan of the Metriod series since the NES. And this game does not disappoint. The controls, the story, the baddies, the music, the classic sound effects (the powerups!) and that slight reflection of Samus' eyes in the visor all make for a fun experience.

I will be getting more games in the near future. Does anyone ( read: you ) have any game suggestions?

So our lease runs out end of April and we aren't going to renew. We need a better neighborhood. One that has businesses other than unisex hair salons and food places with no seating. We have looked at a few places in a few different areas of Brooklyn and decided on the 'Park Slope' region. It is exactly what we want. And therefore the most expensive we have seen. It will be worth it though. We will be closer to Manhattan, but won't have to go there to get a decent meal/drink. We are looking at more apartments this weekend.

Some friends from the hometown were in town this week. They came in on Saturday and left this morning. We were happy to accomodate them. We did a lot of things that I had never gotten around to. Like the Brooklyn Museum and two broadway musicals and a drag caberet dinner show. Wait... I haven't been meaning to see a drag caberet dinner show. But that didn't stop it from being awesomely hilarious. Seriously. It was awesome.

We are planning on going to the beach the first or second week in July. I am really looking forward to some vacation. I literally have been dreaming about the condo we stay at. Its always so relaxing.

Also looking forward to the first weekend in August. More friends visiting. I have been trying to score tickets for a taping of Late Night with Conan O'Brian. But they only offer a week at a time and they aren't up to the week in question.

Good summer planned.

Well, so far the iPhone has lived up to the hype. The only problem I have had with it, is connecting it to my work email. But that is actually the fault of the server not being set up to accept IMAP connections. Still waiting on IT to fix it. But I can just access webmail through the browser. :) So, while inconvenient, I can still function while away from the office if I have to.

I have never before had an iPod. It's kinda sweet. I synced it with my home computer and figured out how to put any video I want on it (including DVDs :)). One of the biggest issues I had with my last mp3 player was the shuffle repeating songs after I turned it off and back on. No longer a problem with the iPhone, because it never goes off! I just wish I could get service while in the subway to browse the intraweb. At least I have my shows to keep my busy.

Valerie and I are going to visit the hometown for christmas. We are bringing our cat, Katy. Flying with a pet. I never thought I would be that guy. But I am.

Oh yea. I bought some new shoes today. To replace the ones that got some holes in them from use. ( I walk a lot ). I went to a shoe place .8 blocks away from the office on my way to grab lunch. Saw some I liked. Tried them on. Bought them. Was in and out in 12 minutes. That's how I like to shop.

It was time for me to upgrade to a new cell phone. That's right, folk(s). I got an iPhone. The smallest plan, which is the same as the one I had plus unlimited data transfer, is only $10 more than what I was paying. It was too good to pass up. And the phone is no slouch. I had tinkered with one in an apple store once, but I failed to experience it fully. Wow. This thing is pretty freaking cool. Everything it does, which is a lot, especially for a cell phone, is two taps away from anywhere else.

I'm afraid I will never be able to go back to a 'regular' cell phone. The damage is done.

The keyboard is a little funny at first.. but I got used to it pretty fast. Already I am faster than I was with text messaging. Still slower than my real-keyboard speed, but getting faster the more I use it. I am going to stop using web-based gmail for a while because I set up mail on the phone. ( How freaking cool is that ) I know there have been phones that can do mail for a long time. But never with such awesomeness. And the data plans were always just a little too expensive for my wallet's taste.

So far.. it's been totally worth it.. And I expect it will continue to please me, because it rocks my freaking socks off. Seriously.

It's been a while.. yada yada yada...

Work is going fairly well. Meaning I got a raise/promotion. The promotion put me in a good position in the company. I am now the lead/only programmer. Came with a good job title and a desk by the window/air conditioner and new hours. Now I work 9-5 instead of the 10-6. Yes.. I chose to go to work an hour earlier every day. It's totally worth getting home an hour earlier.

It is kind of nice to be in control of project development schedules and actually developing the projects. Nothing is ever done in a way I wouldn't have done it.. because I did it. Also.. never a dull moment. Always three things left to do before lunch.

Dude. I got Call of Duty 4. And the single player rocked my socks off. I have yet to play multi, but I will. It's a great game. Along with CoD4, I got Medal of Honor Airborne. I have yet to play MoHA because I have been busy with CoD4. I also, apparently, need to get Bioshock. I am happy that my year-old computer can still handle new games in a maxed-out fashion. I know that won't last forever, but I am going to start taking advantage of it while I still can.

Katy still kicks ass. She has gotten huge compared to her original kitten size. She loves the front window and long walks on the beach. Also curling up in a ball in the billowy part of our comforter. We are taking her to Louisiana for Christmas. Flying cat in a box. Can't wait.

Well. Posting a lot is something I didn't do. :(

Time to watch an episode of Dexter. Peace.

Furniture, Cat, Cooking,
Monday, August 13, 2007
Well. We now have a bedroom set. Minus the mirror, and the chest of drawers. So, that's two night stands, a sleigh bed and a dresser. All I can say, is .. it's about time. Our room doesn't have as much free space in it.. but that space is being put to better use.. by holding furniture instead of holding air. Quite an improvement if I may say. .. so ...

Katy is still awesome. Her ankle attacking has much improved with all of the practice she gets.. If you step off of the stairs and aren't paying attention .. your ankle just may be fake attacked by claw-less paws ( she isn't mean ). Better watch out.

Over the weekend, Valerie and I went grocery shopping.. with the cart.. That means we got a lot more than we could carry.. So we actually have food other than just what we need for a few days.. .. As a result.. I cooked lunch on Saturday. That lunch was composed of philly cheese steak quesadilla's. Not exactly mexican food, mind you. But awesome nonetheless. Pepper steak.. onions.. bell peppers.. a few spices and whatnot.. and swiss cheese on flour tortillas. Making you hungry, right?
And then yesterday.. I cooked up some red beans and rice. Yes.. the classic awesome red beans and rice with sausage.. If you have ever had red beans and rice from popeye's .. these red beans and rice kicked those red beans and rice's ass. I almost forgot what awesome food tasted like. Good thing I know how to make some.

Edit: A word on the comment verification code.. What was that Ben Stiller movie from 2001? The one where those guys die in the freak gasoline fight accident?

Katy the kitty
Saturday, July 28, 2007
Well. We now have a cat. Her name is Katy. I have never had a pet before, but things are going well so far. Cats are good pets.. at least ours is. She hasn't had any accidents and is generally well behaved.. She loves to attack the feather ball thing on a string that we got for her. Its a never ending battle.

Things are going well otherwise also. Still working. I have been doing very little programming outside of work, but I have been working something pretty cool.. as far as I know anyway.. It is a website management system to control content, stylesheet and html from a web interface.. It is coming along nicely.. I am going to convert this blog to it when it is finished.. And I am going to make a little demo section where the various features can be played with by others.. It should be fun..

My flight back to NY is tomorrow night. The vacation was a blast. Got to see my family, hang with friends and do some driving. Mixed in was plenty of beach time and good food. I am a little sunburned, but not anything that will last more than a day or two more.

The majority of the time was in Gulf Shores, AL. In a sweet condo 20 yards from the Gulf of Mexico. While there, I had to do a little work, about 4 hours all week. The air card from AT&T worked okay if I was outside on the right side of the building while standing on one foot. I ended up using a wireless signal from the building ( Joe is never wrong ) most of the time. I am going to return the air card tomorrow before I leave so I don't have to keep paying for something I will never use.

It was a very relaxing vacation that led me to realize how much I missed 'the south' and my family and friends. I didn't think I would miss it so much, but being back I appreciate things more. Something is different. About me maybe.

Vacation time
Thursday, May 31, 2007
Well, I fly out of JFK airport tomorrow morning. I always get anxious the day before a flight. It seems to have to do with being somewhere on time without full control of my transportation method. I will be taking the subway. Trains could be running slow or not at all. And because of the mere possibility, however unlikely (I checked the MTA website for service changes), I will be leaving 4 hours before my flight is scheduled for takeoff despite the ~45 transportation time. Oh well.

I am looking forward to a break from work. My first real vacation. Even though I will be 'working' from wherever I am, it will still be nice to be out of the city for a bit.

It's just something about Manhattan and Brooklyn. I don't feel 100% at home when I am out. When I am home, everything is fine. But walking around in shorts and sandals just doesn't feel like it should. Maybe it's the neighborhood or maybe I just don't have comfortable enough sandals and shorts.

I have been 'exercising' everyday. Consisting of push-ups, pull-ups, chin-ups (yes they are different ;) ) and sit-ups/crunches. I haven't really lost any weight, but I feel better. Opening doors is easier. Which is totally awesome. It's like they just fly open now. I haven't had any trouble keeping up with it because I don't have a strict regimine. I just do some everyday. More on weekends than on weekdays.

Well. Until next month, or maybe, if you are lucky, when I get back from vacation...

What a day.
Friday, April 27, 2007
Well today.. was a Friday. Not just an ordinary Friday, though. So I am going on vacation during the first two weeks of June. Or so I thought before today. Last night my immediate boss called to say that I shouldn't make my return flight from the vacation and that we would talk about it in the morning. So I get into work and nothing happens. When we are on our lunch run to the japanese place I bring it up and he tells me that the higher ups aren't comfortable with he and I not being in the office for an entire week. This is because he is also going on vacation for two weeks, starting a week before mine. So basically, he tells me that I have to be in the office the Tuesday the Thursday after I leave. Needless to say that would ruin my 'two week vacation.'

So I look at a calendar and get to thinking. Now at this point there has been no agreed resolution. So we sit down again to talk it over and I mention that I would be available to work from wherever I am that week. I will be bringing my laptop with me anyway. Now I just need some internet around. They agreed to the working from home coverage so I get to keep my 'two week vacation' with a week of 'being on call'. I am still not sure about whether or not this time will count as vacation time or work time or what. But that is a question for another time.

So I have been meaning to get off of my dad's family plan cell phone plan for a while now. And now this has put me in the situation where I need some sort of magical internet during a week of my vacation. Hmm.. if only there was a company that offers cell phone service and some sort of laptop internet connectivity. WAIT! Cingular, the new AT&T, offers just such services. So I will march into a Cingular place and see what can be done about signing my soul away (aka. the dreaded two year contract). And a Data plan with the PCI card to hook my laptop up to the cellular network and get some internet from it. This way, wherever I am, if I can answer my phone, I can get online! How freaking sweet is that. This will be quite an experience. I hope it won't cost $456078458927345.34. My salary might not cover that exact amount. ;)

Well. My comment section seems to have been targeted by some spammers looking to boost their search ranking by having content in more places. Needless to say, this is very annoying. As a result, comments will now require moderation before they appear. That is, unless you know the Verification Code. I will give it to you if you ask for it and I know you. I will eventually implement some cool random verification code system that changes on refresh and is hard to parse from the html of the page. I think this system will work for a while seeing as how the number of people that comment can be counted on one hand while holding a cup full of milk in that same hand. If you don't know the code, post the comment and I will approve it if it's not stupid, pointless and annoying spam.

In other news:
Work has been going great. We are hiring a few more people! A graphic designer, a marketing campaign assistant and another programmer. Things are looking good. More projects are coming in and we are constantly improving our system. I have really been enjoying the work I have been doing. Trying to make my code more standardized and object oriented. When I started to program, I wasn't sure that I could do it for the rest of my life. But it seems as if I am deriving satisfaction from my work. I like learning new ways to do things and thinking about old problems in different contexts and whatnot.
I'm done. Stay tuned folks.

Another year...
Thursday, February 22, 2007
Well, I am 23. I know it's been.. whatever. I post when I feel like it. And I haven't. Sue me. On a more positive note, Valerie and finally got a real bed. Queen sized. It is nice to sleep on something other than an air mattress for a change. Although that air mattress wasn't too bad. It was about time to grow up. I am getting old, and a real bed is just what the doctor ordered. We also got a washer and a dryer!!! No more laundry-mat. Thank the gods. Our place is becoming more and more like an adult's home.

Work has been going well. Still working 10-6 Mon.-Fri. The commute has been a little more interesting lately on account of the snow that accumulated and remained on the ground for about a week. So walking to the subway was a little more slippery than usual. It has just started to warm up this week and most of the snow is melted. It was nice while it lasted. I hope we get lots more before spring. It makes me want to go skiing or snowboarding or something. I guess that's because snow is still new to me.

Valerie and I went to see Les Miserables last night. Beforehand she claimed that it was the best musical ever written. It did turn out to be fairly entertaining. What with the singing, guns, death, suicide and a little love at first sight.

I have still been keeping up with some tv shows. The list includes (in order of showing starting Monday): Prison Break, 24, Heroes, House (every now and then), Lost and Battlestar Galactica. They are all good shows. Some (Prison Break) have been kind of slow, but still interesting. I won't abandon a show just because of a few slow eps like some people I know.

Well.. the weather has become colder. Winter and all. I need more long sleeve shirts. I don't think I will ever be happy with the amount of clothes that I have. It will either be too much, or not enough, or not the right kind, or something.

On the work front. They made me an offer to hire me. I have been on as a contract/freelance sort of guy. But now.. I will really work there.. with benefits and a salary. It's exciting. I can go to the dentist or something. I haven't been there in quite a spell. Might get my eyes checked. The possibilities are endless.. provided I pay the co-pay ;).

I am going back to Louisiana for the holidays. For a week and half-ish. To see the family. I fly down there on the 22nd and back up on the 3rd of the new year. Hopefully that will give me some time to catch up with some people .. from the past, if you will. A New Year's excursion to the N.O. would be awesome again. Anyways.. back to work for me.

Enjoying the life
Saturday, November 18, 2006
Yea... it's been awhile my faithful reader(s) (who am I kidding?) (it's just one). .. Still working.. still enjoying every day of it.. Still not grocery shopping more than once a month.. and not having food.. But it's cool. I eat lunch at work.. and . water suffices for dinner. .. It has been sorta cold. I wish it was more cold. And less rainy and more snowy. It's mid-November. Time for some snow.

Speaking of the weather...... I was taking the subway home from target.. got on the train that would take me most of the way home but not directly to my stop... I apparently zoned out and missed the stop to transfer.. so I got off at the next one and knew where I was (because I have done this before) so I decided to walk... I knew it would be about a 20 min walk. No biggie.. Two.5 steps out of the subway.. the rain starts.. Not much at first.. and then it really came down.. Of course.. I am without an umbrella.. So I just kept on walking... It was actually quite nice.. While I was walking it occurred to me that my jacket and pants could have used a washing.. and.. they were getting washed.. while I was still in them.. Score. .. Walking in the rain on the sidewalks is nice.. because there are almost no people around to get in your way.. except for the few old ladies with umbrellas aiming to poke out some eyes.. But I avoided those dangers easily enough..

I will try to start delivering this wonderful prose more often. Enjoy.. and.. comment away.

Guess what.

Well. The delivery that will complete my computer is set to be delivered tomorrow. How awesome is that. I went to best buy this evening to purchase a game or two and perhaps a mouse and keyboard to really complete the system. Well they only had one game I was looking for and they didn't have the mouse I am looking for and I wasn't in the mood, nor did I have the time, to shop around for a new keyboard. I have a keyboard and a mouse that will suffice until I can acquire proper computer accessories. In any case, I hope to assemble my computer tomorrow night and install the OS and get the updates and whatnot in order. And possibly.. .. play a little game (BF2 is the game they had, btw). I am psyched.

I remember making a 'promise' that my computer parts would be in my possesion by October 28, 2006 at 12:13pm. Well. I guess I was off by ten days. I will report tomorrow as to when the package is delivered. (It better be 12:13pm EST) (or else) (you hear that delivery man?)

Well. My case arrived today. I am very happy with it. When I got it home, I put my power supply, which arrived on Tuesday, in the case. I want to plug it in and put a usb lamp on it or something.. but I know better. I am going to order some more components tomorrow. DVD burner, sound card, and hard drive.

I have decided to go with the AM2 socket cpu and therefore motherboard. It will mean more expensive mobo/cpu/ram. I figure if I am going to build a computer, I may as well do what I can to leave it open for future upgrades. And that means the new socket-type. I think it will be worth it. I will end up getting a faster cpu than I would have and faster ram as well. It will all work out, and I will have a nice computer to play with :).

The new season of BSG starts tomorrow. I hope it is as good as I know it will be.

Preliminary Idea
Tuesday, September 26, 2006
Let me know what you think. My idea will start out as just something to do when I am home and have nothing else to do. And I hope for it to evolve as time progresses. Adding features now and then.

Anyway. The idea is this. A web-based system for tracking caloric intake and weight. I know I don't need to lose weight. But I would like to stay healthy and keeping track of what you eat is a good step in that direction.

The system would allow you to login and enter meal information for a day or for a meal. It will save meals and their caloric/other nutritional values for future use. It would allow you to graph different things, like weight over a month - given that you update weight information regularly. Other features would be added. Such as a recipe section. Health information section. Etc..

Some market research is in order.

Any thoughts? Suggestions?

Well. This is my new domain. Pointing to my new hosting account. Now I just need something else to host. I will be thinking of ideas.. Please let me know if anyone (you) have any. I will at least be working on my blog system. Making it more portable and whatnot.

Anyways.. I bought some stuff yesterday.. A shirt and some more shoes. Also a wrist pad for my keyboard at work. And I did some laundry today. Not too much else going on. I plan to order my case and psu tonight or tomorrow night. This computer won't build itself. Especially if I don't have the parts all in a pile in the hallway. So.. I will work on that.

Well.. The time has come to start picking out parts to be ordered to be constructed into my new computer. The search has already begun. I will start to order parts, starting with the largest, this weekend.

In other news: On friday, we went to target for a little shopping. I ended up buying an electric razor and a water-pik-like device. The razor works ok... wow.. this is boring the crap out of me and I am typing it. I wish I had something more meaningful to post. I guess my life is just so awesome that nothing stands out. .. .. There was this homeless guy on the subway tonight that smelled horrible who actually lifted his collar and spit onto his stomach area. It was fairly disgusting.

Well lets all hope something awesome enough happens to make the next post.

I have made some changes to my blog. All but one will go un-noticed to the normal user. That one change is the ability to collapse and expand messages. All but the two most recent posts will now show up as collapsed. Using the magic of javascript you can click the plus to expand or the minus to collapse (thanks to joe. I had stupid characters before his input.). The other changes have to do with the formatting of the source code. Take a look if you feel like it to see some awesome looking xhtml. I also edited my personal home page's event notifier thing. It actually works now! Check it out.

On the work front: I am still enjoying working where I work. The work day goes by pretty quickly. Also, I got to work from home today! How awesome is that. I didn't even have to put shoes on today! (read:pants ;) ) Although it did suck not being able to eat out for lunch. That is, sucked for my tastebuds, not my wallet.

I am about to head to the city. Woo! Going to see a movie or eat somewhere. Or both. Who knows.

As many of you might have noticed in the past, I have owned a single pair of shoes for the last 3 years or so. Well yesterday I got some new ones. I promptly left the store .. and threw my old shoes in the nearest trash can. It felt good. Then I bought some new shirts and saw a movie. It was a good day. The movie was scanner darkly. It was exactly like the book. Many scenes were word for word. A few scenes were cut, but nothing really important to the plot or anything. I enjoyed it.

Nothing else really going on. Just working and whatnot. Still enjoying work. I'm getting more used to the subway rides. Standing on a moving train for 30-45 mins twice a day doesn't really bother me any more. I just listen to music and it goes by pretty fast..

Drink Night
Thursday, August 17, 2006
Well tonight was the night out with the co-workers. I just got home. I had a good time. We talked about the South and religion and stuff. We went to two bars. The first was a cocktail sort of place and the second was an Irish sort of place. Both were fun. I'm drunk right now in case you haven't noticed from the lack of ".."'s I am reall tired and I have to go to work tomorrow. It's taking a while to type this out. I misspell things a lot and have to go back and re-type them. I'm sure I missed a few typos. But whatever. This isn't an english paper or something.

I'm done.

The game was awesome once again. Yankees won! I didn't get in until about 30 mins after game time because I was waiting for Valerie to meet me there. I did get a hot dog and it was pretty good. Not super amazing or anything.. but pretty good. I almost got another one on our way out but decided against it. I am glad I held off. It destroyed my stomach last night..

Lessons: going to queens and back takes more than 1 hour, one hot dog from yankee stadium is .5 too many.

I am going out tonight.. maybe.. will report back upon consciousness.

I guess I must still be getting used to riding the subway.. because it still seems like people stand/sit WAY to close to you.. Just the other day, I was sitting on the 5 train on the way to work. I got lucky enough to get a seat during the 45 min ride... but then this guy sits next to me.. and puts his elbow into my side... my arms were crossed thereby exposing my side. He didn't seem to notice. but it was driving me crazy. So I stood up for the rest of the ride.. ..

Anyways.. work is going well. I am getting work done and getting to know my co-workers more. And learning more about programming. Why just today I explored the many facets of unix permissions and ownership. I am also eating in new places constantly. Today someone suggested we go to the food court in grand central terminal. I got chinese. And I even ate it with chopsticks! I was pretty good at it. I didn't even get any on my clothes.

We got more baseball tickets. For Tuesday. This time I have to get a hot dog. I have to. I will make sure to have a few dollars cash. Enough for two and maybe a beer. How sweet will that be.

First week complete
Friday, August 4, 2006
I am now a working man. I have a full time job.. and this is my first weekend .. mmmmm. I hope to sleep in as much as possible.. and do not much else. Although.. we have some friends from LA coming in tonight to stay for a day or two.. so we might be doing stuff afterall.

We bought an A/C unit to replace the crappy one that we had in our office. Its an 8,000 btu frigidaire. I installed when I got home today. It blows hard.. and cold.. it even has a remote and an auto-temp mode in which it detects the temperature in the room via some strange temperature sensing device.

First day of work
Wednesday, August 2, 2006
Well today was the day. I was to report into the office 'around 11'. I, of course, show up early. I had already been introduced to most of the employees there, but I got to know them a little today. I started off the day reformatting a machine and putting windowsxppro back on it and getting it all updated and whatnot. I also began familiarizing myself with their system and how they operate. I am going to really enjoy working there.

When I left work, Valerie was waiting for me outside and we got something to eat in the area and made our way to yankee stadium for the game against the bluejays. My first yankee game. Coupled with my first day of work. All I can say is jawsome. One of Valerie's friends gave us tickets as our 'housewarming gift.' It was a good game. In the 4th inning the yankees scored 4 points. It was awesome. The crowd was freaking out. Just imagine: bases loaded.. no outs.. batter hits a double, bringing in 3 rbi's. It was very loud... .. .. There was also a cheer that originated above me whenever #20 was up to bat. 'HIP HIP'......'HOORAY!' .. and then I noticed the name of #20 : Jorge Posada. They weren't saying 'HOORAY!' .. even more awesome... they were saying 'JOR--GE' (pronounced HOORHAY!). It was awesome.

Then we got to ride home on the subway from yankee stadium with the other 52,000 attendees. It was a crowded subway car to say the least.

Job == true == finally.
Wednesday, July 19, 2006
Well today I had my first second interview. It was surreal. I walk in. They usher me to the conference room thing and I wait for about 6 minutes. Guy walks in and says that they made a decision and they want to take me on. !. Long story short, I start August 1st as a contract worker. Its the situation where I work full time without salary and benefits for a while and then get upgraded should they see fit. I couldn't ask for more. Its the job that I wanted. And I got it.

So now I get to wait until August 1st. Its not too far away. But I have very little to do until then. Just what I have had since I moved here. Internet, games, books, and tv. I hope it goes by fast. I want to get my career started.

The job interview I had went really well. They asked me stuff about me and why I moved here from Louisiana. Along with other basic job interview stuff ( Why web coding? How did you get started? ...). And then the technical questions began. It was awesome. There were questions about search algorithms, binary trees, recursion, object oriented vs procedural, interpreted vs compiled. It was like a computer science test. I have never been so glad that I paid attention in my classes.

After the questions, both of the guys that were interviewing me told me a little about the company and what they do. Then they said that they had some other people to talk to and they would be making a decision within a week and let me know either way. This was good to hear. An answer either way is always better than none at all. So I leave and go home to await hearing from them. .... .... Wednesday night, I get an email from them around 8pm while I was playing goldeneye (woo). The gmail email notifier thing slid up and I saw who it was from and the first few words.. "We were impressed..." It was a good moment. They want to 'sit down with me again' next week. This is good. The first second interview I have had. Progress is being made. I really hope this opportunity turns into a job.

Anyways.. I have some stuff to do.. not really.. well.. unless you count eating and playing games stuff.. I do however have a party to go to tonight.. One of Valerie's friends is having a 21st birthday party. We were invited.. we will attend.. I hope its fun

Our sofa and loveseat ( EDIT: seen here )set were planned to arrive today. In anticipation of this, Valerie and I cleaned up downstairs so we would actually have some room to put the things. The cleaning spilled over into the dining room and kitchen as well as upstairs. Dishes, vacuuming, dusting, folding clothes, throwing away piles of junk mail not even addressed to us. The place looks nice and clean. The sofa and love seat arrived and we unraveled them ( they were both wrapped in saran wrap and cardboard ) and put them in place. We even put a little rug on the floor.

Our first floor is nearly complete. It needs a coffee table and perhaps an end table or two. It could also use some stuff on the walls. Classy stuff mind you, not just movie posters or whatever. Or at least not un-framed movie posters.

On other fronts, I have another job interview lined up for Monday. This will be my third and hopefully last. I really need a job. For the obvious monetary purposes, but also for the something to do reason. I don't even have a reason to get up before noon and I haven't been. I sit around and watch tv and play games all day. Its fun of course. But something more is needed. It still just feels like a summer vacation to me. Not like I am finished with school and moved away. Hopefully having a job will complete the feeling of the next stage in life.

Well.. still no job. I have been applying to everything that I think I am capable of. Permanent and contract.

I have been keeping busy though.. working on a website for a friend.. learning some new stuff.. getting more javascript exp... When I am not working on that.. I am either cooking, sleeping, or playing some emulated game.

We actually went to the city today to scope out a shooting location for a movie. We ended up going to the movies and eating dinner there too. It is pretty hot outside.. and the undergroud subway stations aren't exactly temerature controlled. At least the subway cars are. I had my mp3 player blasting some Cake during the rides... good stuff.. .. oh.. i saw more rats on the tracks today than I ever have in my life. I wonder how freaking dirty the tracks would be without those little scavengers. People have a tendancy to litter uncontrollably.

Well. I had a job interview yesterday. I was pretty nervous about it because it was only my second one ever. I was all snazzed out in slacks and a nice shirt and tie and I got there 10 minutes early. And then I opened my mouth. And it only got worse. I fumbled through every question. At one point I even said 'object-oriented-ness'. Not joking. I think I said 'I don't know' at least five times. And 'I haven't had much experience with that' at least 7 times. I even downplayed my role in v50. Then towards then end, after an awkward silence, one of the guys interviewing me stands up and says 'Thanks for taking the time to meet with us today.' *another moment of awkward silence* And then I got up and left.

So the lesson here, kids, is to not drink a tall dark chocolate chip frappawhatever just to kill some time before an event you are really nervous about. My hands were shaking and I couldn't talk straight to save my life.

On a different note. My brother left yesterday morning. He was here for a week. I had a really good time. We did a lot of things. We actually did something every day. I even got two game-pad controllers for my computer and expanded my emulator game collections. So we played some super-nintendo every night. Super Mario Kart! Uniracers! F-zero! All the games I grew up with.. mmmm. And I just got Super Metroid!!!!! The best game ever made for super nintendo. And I have a game controller to play it with. No 'wasd' for me.

Tuesday will make three weeks that I have been in my new home. I think I am getting used to the area and the subway system. When I am en-route to my place, it feels like I'm going home. I guess thats a good adjustment to make.

My brother has been in town for a few days and we have been going around doing a lot of touristie things in and around the city. I have to say that I have been having a lot of fun. We went to several museums, statue of liberty, empire state building, ground zero, and walked around in china town/little italy area.

We had our first party here last night. There were 4 of us. We drank a little and played some cards at our new table. We played some Uno and some poker. It was a pretty good time. I am looking forward to having more parties over here once we get some more furniture. Our two guests had to sleep on the floor. One of them had an air mattress and the other a foam-thing layer on top of carpet. We need to get our guest bedroom set up with a good futon or something.

On the job front.
I have still been applying daily to places of interest. I have acutally been personalizing my cover-letters when the company is apparent in the listing and I think it works better that way. I got an email yesterday to set up an interview for one of the companies that I applied to this week. So things are looking better at least.

Furniture == true;
Wednesday, June 7, 2006
Well. Today was the day that furniture was supposed to be delivered to us. We ordered a dining table and chair set and two office desks and two office chairs. Both deliveries arrived after 5pm. We have been building since then. I am proud to say that we now have a dining table set and two office desks and two office chairs. Imagine that.

I just finished setting up my computer at my desk and I am actually sitting in my new chair at my new desk :). I will take some pictures and post them here tomorrow. I'm sure you will approve. And if not. Well. Then then you wont.. yea.

Valerie and I ordered office desks and chairs from office max on friday. They are scheduled for delivery tomorrow. We got the same desk and the same chair. A $400 order. It will be nice to do things with a computer and not be on the floor. I'm sure you know the feeling.

Today we are going to a cheap furniture store that delivers to buy a dining room table and chairs set. So our home will be ~25% furnished by tomorrow night.

I have the intraweb at my place now. We had an appointment with the cable guy for tonight between 5 and 8pm. The guy calls me at 9am asking if its ok to come on over now. I fell out of bed. He was here within the hour and internet and cable were functioning within 45mins. He had some issues with the wiring but he fixed it apparently. So all is go here in Brooklyn. Now I just need one of those job things.

New Home
Friday, June 2, 2006
Well I have been in my new home since Tuesday. We have been buying things that we need for the house and unpacking and whatnot. It is a new experience, but a good one.

I purchased a lot of new dress clothes. I hope to be changing my 'look' completely. I got rid of a lot of my 'college' clothes by not taking them with me. I did have limited luggage space afterall.

I had a job interview today and I think it went ok. The guy said he would call me Monday or Tuesday to set up a follow-up interview. They were really busy when I was there so I didn't get to talk to the coder that was to determine my skills or whatever. I also have another possible interview with another company. So, things on the job front are moving along nicely.

I still don't have internet at my place, but the cable guy is supposed to come on Sunday so give us the modem and 'set it up'. I will probably get the intraweb around Wednesday in two weeks or so considering the 'cable guy' stereotype. Wish me luck my loyal reader.

Hanging at home
Thursday, May 25, 2006
I have been sitting around here at home before I make the move. I am still applying for jobs and whatnot and got some bad news today about a couple of interview opportunities that I thought I would have. Hopefully I can get a few more opportunities lined up and scheduled before I make the move. Hopefully now that I am available next week for interviews instead of next month, I will get some more 'bites'. Only time will tell.

I went on a bike ride yesterday to the lakefront with my brother. I got a little sunburnt, but it was fun. I will certainly miss the scenery around here.

New Blog
Monday, May 22, 2006
This is my new blog. I will be altering the layout/colors in the near future. Let me know of you have any thoughts.

Oh. Please leave a comment to this post so I will know if you are reading this and therefore know where my new blog is.

Well. I have graduated from college. Back at my dad's house. I will be here for the next week. Then I will be moving on to a new state/life. I am excited/nervous/excited. I need to pack, but before I begin packing I will have to purchase some luggage and pack up everything that I have accumulated throughout my entire life. Shouldn't be too hard. I will be taking only some clothes. Not all of it because some of my clothes are full of holes and are fairly old.

Anyway.. I am going to post here more often hopefully. I mean.... I didn't make this little blog thing so I could ignore it. So wish my and my posting luck.
